They are copies of The Refugee Nation Flag , symbol for millions of refugees worldwide. The colours, bright orange with black, represent the horizon and at the same time refer to a life jacket.
Artist Yara Said designed the flag in 2016. She fled Syria herself and reached the island of Lesbos via a crossing from Turkey to Greece. There were piles of abandoned life jackets, which inspired her to design it.

With the flag she wants to increase hope and solidarity and show that refugees are not only victims, but also survivors and fighters. It became a symbol for millions of people worldwide who were forced to leave their homes behind.

The flags are exhibited in various places. For example, you can find them in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and in the new Fenix museum in Rotterdam. Around the opening of Fenix on 16 May, they were also flying on the Boompjeskade, but they were removed at the end of May.
